Future Skills Catalogue
Curated and created microlearning for an LXP
Future Skills is up there as one of my favourite projects so far. It’s a catalogue of 13 topics on the skills we’ll need for the workplace of the future, designed specifically for Learning Pool’s Stream LXP. This presented different design challenges, and I have enjoyed being instrumental in shaping the learning design for this from the start of the project, which has drawn on my leadership and strategy experience from Boots, as well as my learning design skills.

I took on the first topic, Creativity, which was showcased at LTUK 2020 and received fantastic feedback, and since a team of brilliant other internal Learning Designers have come on board to tackle the rest of the topics alongside me, following the format I developed for the first pilot topic. We've created games, animations, video, diagnostic tools, mini modules, activities, used Storyline, Adapt, standalone video and animation...

I’d love to work on more projects like this – genuine microlearning not bound by one format or authoring tool, really creative and designing for an LXP instead of a traditional LMS is an interesting new challenge. Here are some sample learning resources from this project.

Scripting for animation
Research / SME
For each topic I designed a Welcome module which introduces the topic and why it is an important future skill, then explains how to use the learning resources in the module. In this one I scripted and specified imagery and transitions for an animation which was then produced by the internal graphic designers and animators. See it in action below.
Each topic combines created and curated content to provide the learner with an exploratory experience, where they decide what they do and how much of it. The LXP recommends learning that is most relevant to them and that others in their organisation have rated highly.
For the curated pieces I researched each topic with a future skills lens and curated the best resources on the internet for Learning Pool’s learners, and then combined with bespoke created pieces which are truly bitesize and more active - such as trying out a creativity technique digitally, a game to test their soft skills, or a diagnostic tool.

I've designed tens of modules for this brilliant project, so I can't show them all, but finally, this is an example of an active digital task to help learners understand more about themselves or their work.
I designed these for things like creative thinking exercises or here is one helping learners to identify who their customers are, even if they think they’re not in a traditional customer facing role. The learner answers a set of thought-provoking questions designed to help them understand who they’re really working for. They can print a dynamic PDF version which will be automatically populated with their answers from the open text questions, or could print a blank one if they prefer to carry out the exercise by hand or with their team in a meeting. They can use it multiple times too in case they think they have multiple customer types. It’s a flexible and useful resource characteristic of everything designed for this project.
